Bachelor of Architecture: A career for independent minds

Nations are shaped by their intrinsic human capacity, as also their built environment. Architecture is the science and art of designing the wider built environment around us. The academic discipline of architecture has traditionally attracted independent minds, who after completion of the five-year programme, are groomed and nurtured to create the built environment strongly rooted in space, place, and culture. As Frank Gehry, arguably the most celebrated architect of our times, observes, architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearns for timelessness. Young, independent minds who join the programme shall through formal training master the art of shaping the built environment by unleashing their creativity on design of space, shape, and form in light. Architects are known for strategic thinking on real world problems, most notably on our commons, including design of cities and in improving participation and civic reform. An example of architects applying their creativity on ‘real-world’ problems is the conceptualisation of the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) designed by Architect Jamie Lerner, the then mayor for the town of Curitiba in Brazil. The brilliantly designed transport system now finds application in over 200 cities on our planet, and offers affordable, low carbon mobility for over 30 million passengers every day.

Architecture Education: Our Philosophy

We aim to serve as an atelier for higher learning in the disciplines of architecture and urban planning. The school encourages pluralism in design outcomes. Furthermore, the school shall strive to inculcate in its wards the spirit of the time within which different architectural movements took shape and transformed the built environment. The school reinforces the pivotal importance of space, genus loci, people, culture, and technology in shaping the built environment. The School embraces however a technology neutral approach towards understanding and practice of architecture. We encourage independent thinking and alternate, attractive, and viable solutions to real world problems particular to the Indian sub-continent. Solutions fostering sustainability, energy conscious designing, low carbon and ecological footprint, localism, contemporaneous expression of traditional practice, are particularly encouraged.

Pedagogy and Learning Curve at the Aurora Design Academy

If you are contemplating a career in architecture, this course is for you. You will spend mornings exploring architectural principles such as composition, history, preservation, planning, urban design, etc. You will also dive deep into the realm of building construction, structures, acoustics, lighting, energy conservation, sustainability, etc. You will spend afternoons and some late evenings at the Design Studios where you will put into practice what you learn in the mornings. Classroom teaching apart, you will gain exposure in the field through field visits and site work. Tackling major real-world problems every semester shall form the core of your course. You will gain exposure to analog and digital computing tools in architecture design. Faculty will work closely with you to help you evolve into an architect, a title you are eligible to gain at the end of your programme. Come, begin this exciting journey of exploration into architectural education with us and help us transform you into an independent minded architect capable of contributing to society in more ways than one.

Career Prospects in Architecture

As the celebrated architect Mies Van Der Rohe famously said, architecture is the will of an epoch translated into space. Architecture is a discipline for creative, diligent, willing-to-learn, observant minds. Architecture is also a discipline where growth is boundless. Following economic reform introduced in the country in the early 1990s and the frenetic pace of urbanisation in the country, the practice of architecture in both volume and outreach has grown manifold. Architects contributing to the greater good of commons are revered in society, and as in most professions, talent breeds success and success begets more visibility and greater success. Residential buildings apart, architects also design buildings such as museums, public libraries, cinema theatres, shopping malls, bus terminuses, railway stations, and practically all the built environment we see around us. Following completion of the Bachelor’s programme in architecture, students may opt to establish their practice after apprenticeship with senior architects or choose to specialise in various disciplines such as landscape architecture, urban design, urban planning, product design, industrial design, housing and habitat design, transportation planning, etc.
